THE HUMAN-ORIENTED AND CUSTOMIZED HAS BECOME THE MAINSTREAM OF SMART LIGHTING INDUSTRY

According to the China’s Road Map to Eliminate Incandescent Lamp (Draft Standard for Comment), it is forbidden to import and sell general incandescent lamps of and over 15 watts since Oct 1st, 2016, which is the final stage in the road map to eliminate incandescent lamps. Therefore, incandescent lamps, as one of the greatest inventions in 19th Century will be entirely eliminated from China’s market since Oct 1st.

Due to the above, CFL and LED will embrace another spring for development. It is worth special noting that, the trend of smart lighting driven by the Internet of Things and Information Technology will not only save energy, but could also change color temperature, color and add dynamic effects, thus simulating hundreds of scenarios and become a major part of the Internet of Things services.

According to research statistics, the smart lighting market could reach 8.71 billion USD (around 57.9 billion RMB) in 2019. While today smart lighting market is in its early stage, its vast market potential has been highly regarded by the professional with the trend of the Internet of Things. Companies not only from lighting industries, but also giants from electronics, sciences, and IT industries step into smart lighting business one after another to take a share in the cake of the market.

Smart Lighting Market: Strong Market Demand with More Potential

With many lighting, science and technology companies stepping into the market, the future growth trend of smart lighting is apparent. However since some key technical issues are not tackled yet with even the occurrence of pseudo-smart, the current smart lighting market has not played to its full potential.

Currently, demand to apply smart lighting in business scenario is strong. In this area, wired control systems are relatively great in number and more sophisticated, yet not convenient to install and arrange cables. Meanwhile, wireless systems are easy to install but still need to improve the stability of wireless signals under complex environments and large-scale network nodes and the capacity to scale up.

In the area of household lighting, most smart lighting systems could connect with the Internet but still have a long way to go to be real smart. “To connect with the Internet is only the first step, but to go further and to truly realize easy-to-use, comfortable and energy-saving effects, more human-oriented smart control approaches are needed, e.g. control with automatic perception sensors and other artificial intelligent control,” said by the professional.

Besides technological bottlenecks, expensive pricing is also an important reason for the slow popularization of smart lighting. Compared to traditional lighting, to some extent, adding smart lighting control increases projects’ overall cost. It is especially true in household lighting area. Smart lighting need to be more approachable in pricing with better user experience so as to make smart lighting familiar to wider users, instead of few early adopters, thus realizing households’ transition from traditional lighting to smart lighting.

Smart Lighting by Aid of Internet of Things

Accompanied by substantial increased lighting facilities, and lighting control requirements becoming more complex, only through smart control system could refined management of city lighting be achieved, and it is much more convenient of environmental protection activity. Smart lighting as an important part of the smart city, with the application of urban sensing network, Power Line Communication technology, the city street lights are connected, which forms ‘Internet of Things’.

Taking the IOT pioneer ‘Smart’ Street Lighting as an example, LED lights provide not only lighting function, but also a basis of the network. As the bearer of smart city sensor network, LED lights could connect a variety of sensors on the market, and integrate lighting management, sensor management, WIFI coverage, video surveillance with cloud system as big data of IOT. Through the smart lighting system to collect the front-end data, services for businesses, users are provided by systematic analysis and prediction of the big data. Therefore, the future lighting will also become a part of IOT service, which contains huge commercial value.

Customization being Big Orientation of Smart Lighting

As one of the three major high-end categories (museum lighting, hotel lighting, commercial lighting), hotel lighting plays an important role in creating the atmosphere of human life. With the rapid development of China hotel industry, competition becomes increasingly intense. The traditional mode of hotel lighting service has been gradually unable to meet the needs of the hotel industry. With the challenges and opportunities coexisting on the occasion, the creation of new service model of intelligent lighting system, the implementation of standardized and customized hotel lighting are the current mainstreams.

Hotel lighting plays the role of taking advantage of light to create a nice living environment, to make customers safe, comfortable and feel just like home. Moreover, this environment also can guide comfortable and satisfactory consummation, and ultimately attract guests to leave a good memory and come back again, with outstanding artistic details, increasing the service function.

Currently, the competitiveness of China’s hotel lighting brand mainly focuses on product and research and development. Compared to other commercial lighting, due to strong regional features, different regions shall have different the demands for hotel lighting. Therefore, the demands of lighting products put more emphasis on functionality and diversity, which also requires lighting service to provide a wide range of products to meet the lighting needs of different functions.

In addition, the other important point is, since hotel belongs to service industry, personalized products, especially experiencing and interactive products should meet the needs of hotel lighting. This also requires lighting service to provide the capability to research and develop customized and personalized products for hotel.

‘Smart’ of smart lighting is infinite, and it gets more and more attention from metropolitan with its great economic and social benefits, which can be regarded as the Popular ‘smart city construction’. Regardless of this kind of enthusiastic and rapid construction, builders need to remain calm and objective, and not to rush on the large-scale construction with the great leap forward.
